Refractory angina pectoris, the chronic condition of angina in the setting of coronary artery disease that cannot be controlled by multiple treatment options, has not had a dedicated diagnosis code. This year, new ICD-10-CM codes have been added to properly reflect and document the condition.

A new code has been added to the I20 angina pectoris category for refractory angina pectoris.

Additionally, the I25 atherosclerosis category has been updated to include refractory angina. The new codes are:

The changes for ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes in the 2023 code book go into effect on October 1, 2022.
