    Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

    Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a disease in which the muscle of the lower left chamber of the heart (the left ventricle) becomes abnormally thick and enlarged. This thickening typically affects some parts of the ventricle walls more than others (doctors call this “asymmetric thickening”).

    The genetic heart condition known as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, or HCM, had made normal daily activities like walking up a flight of stairs difficult for Kevin. Then he collapsed at work and learned he was suffering severe heart failure caused by the HCM. He worked with his doctor to carefully evaluate the treatment options and underwent a procedure called alcohol septal ablation. Now Kevin is back to coaching his kids football and lacrosse teams, walking the fields where they play with ease. Read his story.
