    Angiogram

    If your stress test or other symptoms indicate significant blockages in your heart arteries, an interventional cardiologist may perform an angiogram. This test, often referred to as "cath" or cardiac catheterization, allows your care team to see the blockage so they can recommend the best treatment for you.

    A heart attack occurs when a blockage in one or more of your arteries prevents the blood that normally supplies oxygen and nutrients to the heart from making it to its destination. (Heart attack may also be referred to as acute myocardial infarction, AMI, or MI.)

    During balloon angioplasty, stenting and other catheter-based heart treatments, a specialist called an interventional cardiologist performs the necessary procedure.

    If the angiogram shows serious blockages, the interventional cardiologist may immediately perform a coronary intervention procedure, such as balloon angioplasty and stenting, to open them and restore blood flow to your heart. Or he or she may refer you for bypass surgery, a surgical method for restoring blood flow.

    Angiogram

    An angiogram is a diagnostic procedure that provides detailed, x-ray pictures of your heart and its blood vessels. It is performed by a specially trained cardiologist, called an interventional cardiologist.

    Stress Testing

    If your doctor suspects you may have blockages in the coronary arteries that supply blood to your heart or other heart problems, you may be scheduled for a stress test. This test, sometimes called an exercise stress test, measures how well your heart functions when it has to work harder.
