SCAI Members Provide Insights on "the Radial Revolution"
As reflected in media coverage over the past few weeks, SCAI continues to be front and center in support of interventional cardiologists making the transition to transradial access. SCAI’s latest expert consensus document, “Best Practices for Transradial Angiography and Interventions,” received significant interest, as did last week’s SAFE-PCI trial, which found radial PCI was as safe, or perhaps safer, than the femoral approach for women. Sunil Rao, MD, FSCAI, was the lead author of the SCAI consensus document as well as SAFE-PCI’s principal investigator.
Medpage Today tied the two pieces together with a feature, “The Radial Revolution, Catching the Wave,” which includes video from SCAI leaders Gregory Dehmer, MD, FSCAI, Ajay Kirtane, MD, FSCAI, Kenneth Rosenfield, MD, MHCDS, FSCAI, and Thomas Tu, MD, FSCAI. The story highlights SCAI’s transradial education efforts, which have included the Transradial Interventional Program (TRIP) series visiting Phoenix on December 15 and the Transradial Minisymposium held to full rooms each year at SCAI Scientific Sessions.

Trifecta: St. Joseph's Second to Achieve CAS, PCI and Diagnostic Cath Accreditation
Newly accredited St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center in Syracuse, NY, is the second U.S. hospital to accomplish accreditation in all three Accreditation for Cardiovascular Excellence (ACE) cardiovascular quality disciplines: Diagnostic Cath, PCI and Carotid Artery Stenting. It is also one of only two hospitals in New York State to achieve ACE accreditation.
Validating the cardiovascular service line with ACE programs indicates an emphasis on quality and placing the patient at the center of its activities. "Our goal of accreditation was to reach the highest quality standard in our industry, which results in the highest quality of care to our patients," said Alan J. Simons, MD, FSCAI, Medical Director of St. Joseph's Cardiac Catheterization Lab.
St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center is a facility that has evolved into a system of health care services. From a 15-bed hospital to a 431-bed hospital and health system that encompasses a 16-county service area, the integration of St. Joseph's many programs delivers quality services to the community and provides them in a coordinated, continuous way.
A proactive approach is the best defense when it comes to assessing cardiovascular services and ACE is the best insurance policy for those services.

eLearning Spotlight: PVD Online Designed for All Knowledge Levels
Feedback from SCAI's membership has consistently ranked educational opportunities in peripheral vascular disease (PVD) as a primary interest. That's why the Society added the SCAI Peripheral Vascular Disease Online Curriculum to its eLearning Library.
"The course is designed for all physicians, regardless of their background in PVD," said Course Director Christopher J. White, MD, FSCAI. "By providing information on basic as well as advanced aspects of PVD, we are able to offer a course that is just as useful to experts as it is to physicians just getting into this area."
Offering up to 15 CME credit hours and ideal for physicians interested in learning the background, potential complications, and treatment options for peripheral vascular disease, Peripheral Vascular Disease Curriculum Online features 24/7 access to 15 modules that operate as an online textbook of information. Each module includes a slide presentation as well as pre- and post-tests to help you assess your learning. Navigating through presentations is easy due to several key features, including expanded search capabilities that allow physicians to search for key terms and phrases within the text and audio to quickly target information.
