SCAI Writes to Support Legislative Amendment in Pennsylvania

    October 04, 2019

SCAI writes to express strong support for amending Pennsylvania Act 112 to exclude cardiovascular testing. Currently, the law requires that physicians performing diagnostic tests inform patients when those tests identify significant abnormalities. While the requirements are vague, the act requires that after every outpatient diagnostic catheterization, patients must sign a form acknowledging that the interventional cardiologist discussed the results with the patient. SCAI explains in the letter that an interventional cardiologist performs a post-procedural check after every invasive procedure, and as a routine part of the check, the interventional cardiologist discusses the results of the procedure with the patient and family. The argument is made that the current law does not apply to cardiovascular disease and creates anxiety for the patient while adding to a heavy administrative workload for physicians and staff.
