SCAI Seeks Removal of NCD for Transvenous (Catheter) Pulmonary Embolectomy

    July 10, 2019

On July 9, 2019, SCAI submitted a request to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to expedite the removal of a national coverage determination (NCD) for transvenous (catheter) pulmonary embolectomy (240.6). The NCD, which CMS has not reviewed in more than three decades, finds “transvenous (catheter) pulmonary embolectomy” to be experimental and therefore, non-covered. In our letter to CMS, SCAI advises CMS that the nomenclature used in the NCD is confusing and that catheter-based arterial thrombectomy/embolectomy is not “experimental,” rather it has become standard of care. Once CMS has accepted the request, CMS typically posts a 30-day comment period. SCAI will keep a watchful eye and alert members once the comment period opens so that you can voice your support for the removal of this outdated coverage policy.
