• Emerging Leader Mentorship (ELM) Committee

    Chairs

Chair: Thomas M. Tu, MD, FSCAI (May 2016–2019)
Co-Chair: Duane S. Pinto, MD, MPH, FSCAI (May 2016–2019)
    Staff Liaison: Jean McMahon (jmcmahon@scai.org)

    Mission

To identify physicians who are 3-8 years out of training and foster development of enduring national leaders in all aspects of interventional cardiology through mentorship, training sessions, committee service and other leadership opportunities. (Please note: This committee is a closed committee as it serves as the Selection Committee for the ELM Program.)

    Goals (2016–2019)

    • Ongoing Program Development, including graduation of first ELM class and initiation of second class of ELM Fellows, and continuing to innovate as a pre-eminent leadership program.

    • Six training sessions per two-year cycle, satellite sessions as available, faculty appointments at scientific sessions, and writing opportunities culminating in ELM fourth class graduation in 2017 and initiation of fifth class in 2017.

    • Assignment and supervision of mentor-mentee relationships.

    • Review and update SCAI/ACC/CRF Memorandum of Understanding, including more reciprocal relationships.

    • Merge ICDC into ELM Program and provide leadership and oversight for ICD Subcommittee (same staff lead), reducing the number of SCAI committees.

    • In each ELM class, encourage diversity in terms of gender, non-academic, pediatric, OUS, etc.

    • Incorporate all ELM Fellows substantively into key committees within SCAI, in order to aid in the day-to-day work of the Society, and hold ELM Fellows accountable to work on that Committee; must present substantive achievements on their assigned committee for graduation.

    • 2017 ELM application cycle: increase marketing, including ELM program brochure, and collaboration with SCAI, ACC, CRF as well as international societies (ESC, CAIC, etc.) in order to increase applications; ensure that criteria enables balance between non-academic and academic winners per cycle, while retaining representation of the field as a whole.

    • Grow the ELM Mentor pool to create a networking lattice between all ELM Fellows (past and present) and ELM Mentors (including past ELM fellows).

    • Ensure sound financial support for the program, coordinating closely with the Development Committee.
